Maya Depth Map Shadows

Get settings from the site Weecho gave us

Under Shadows Tab-
*Select Depth Map Shadows
*Resolution: 1024
*Filter size: 5
*Disk Mapped Dmaps: overwrite existing dmap(s)

Under Mental Ray tab-
*Use mental ray shadow map overrides
*take settings from Maya
*play with softness

You can also use the linear decay rate to soften the shadow over time

  1. Remember that 'filter size' is analogous to 'samples' in the mental ray drop down. If your shadows look grainy, you need to increase the samples. Try to keep to multiples of 56. For some reason that works best.

Also, shadow map shadows cannot soften by distance. If you want that, you'll have to use 'raytrace shadows' but your render times will take a big hit.

If your shadows look kinda' crappy, first thing you should do is double the resolution to 2048 then increase samples.

Hope that helps, thanks for posting this!
